Chapter Eight

Noel

It was the eighteenth day of December, two days since the shit with CeCe happened, and I still hadn’t heard from her. This shit was eating me up, because we never went without talking to each other when she’s here, and this was the second time since she’s been back home.

Turning my phone over in my hand, I fought the urge to reach out to December. The last thing a nigga wanted to do was make her any more uncomfortable than she clearly already was.

“Daddy! Can I come in?” Ocean asked as she opened the door.

"Well, I guess so since you’re already coming in.”

“Sorry, but this couldn’t wait! It’s an urgent matter!”

I cackled. “An urgent matter, huh? What is it, Amelia?”

“The urgent matter is that today is Saturday! Do you know what Saturday means? It means we’re supposed to volunteer at the shelter with CeCe, but she hasn’t called yet! Call her, daddy!” She squealed.

“Alright, calm down. You go get dressed, and I’ll call CeCe.”

Ocean scurried out of the room, and I took a deep breath before shooting December a text. It took a few minutes, but she finally replied, telling us to meet her downtown. I went and jumped in the shower since my damn six-ager was going to take a lifetime choosing her outfit.

We made it to Covenant House, and the line of people waiting to eat was heartbreaking. I was forever grateful to have had a hardworking mother who made sure we never ended up in this predicament. We may have only had enough to get by, but shit we got by with a roof over our heads and food on the table.

Scanning the parking lot, it took a minute to find CeCe, and when I did, my ass laughed. She’d drug Mrs. Miranda and Ice down here to volunteer, too. It was clear that she was still feeling some type of way about the other day. I grabbed Ocean’s hand, and we walked towards them.

“Hey Mom Mom! Hey auntie Ice! Hiii Mama CeCe! I just missed you girls so much!” She greeted, giving them air kisses.

“Heyyy, diva! I missed you, too! Where you been?” Ice entertained her.

“At home with my daddy!”

Mrs. Miranda shook her head. “That’s why her little ass is grown now. I told you about leaving that child with Ice. Hell, I wouldn’t leave the pet turtle I don’t have with Ice’s ass.”

I chortled. “She’s harmless. Ocean knows how far to push it, and if she does too much, then an ass whooping follows. Ain’t that right?”

“Yes sir.”

Out of my peripheral, I noticed CeCe shuffling back and forth. It was obvious that she was still in her head, so I decided to help her out.

“We not speaking today?

She gave me a smile that didn’t quite reach her eyes. “Hey, Noel.”

“Hey, Noel? Damn, that’s cold. I got the hint, say less.”

Ice and Mrs. Miranda were looking between the two of us trying to figure out what the fuck was going on. I wasn’t going to press December.
